MOVING AND STORING PIANOS

Moving

Moving a piano can be daunting, but sometimes it’s necessary. Whether you’re moving to a new home or need to store your piano for a period of time, a storage unit can be a great solution. Here are some tips for moving and keeping a piano in a storage unit: 1a. Hire professionals Moving a piano is not a DIY project. Pianos are heavy and delicate instruments that require special handling. It’s essential to hire professional movers who have experience moving pianos. They will have the equipment and expertise to safely and efficiently move your piano. 1b. Moving the piano yourself Pianos can weigh from 300 pounds to 800 pounds, while grand pianos can weigh up to 1,400 pounds, so if you plan on moving your piano yourself, ask a few people for help. Piano boards, dollies, and heavy-duty straps are great for moving pianos. Measure the route’s doorways, hallways, and staircases from your piano to the moving truck. 2. Choose the proper storage unit When choosing a storage unit for your piano, choose one that is climate-controlled. Pianos are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, which can cause damage to the instrument. A climate-controlled unit will maintain a consistent temperature and humidity, protecting your piano from damage. 3. Prepare your piano for storage Before storing your piano, it’s essential to prepare it properly. Remove all accessories, such as the bench, music stand, and pedals. Cover the piano with a soft cloth or blanket to protect it from dust and scratches. If you’re storing your piano for an extended period of time, consider having it tuned before storing it. 4. Secure your piano in the storage unit Once your piano is in the storage unit, secure it properly. Use straps or ropes to secure the piano to the wall or floor of the unit. This will prevent it from tipping over or moving while in storage. Keep your piano playing keys for years to come with self storage for protection. TELLUS SELF STORAGE – ...

MOVING HEAVY ITEMS SAFELY

Moving

Moving furniture and other heavy items can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not used to it. It’s important to take safety precautions to prevent injuries and damage to your property. In this blog post, we’ll explore some tips for being safe while moving furniture and other heavy items. 1. Plan ahead Before you start moving furniture and other heavy items, it’s important to plan ahead. Determine the best route to take and make sure the area is clear of obstacles. Measure the furniture and doorways to ensure that it will fit through without any issues. Having a plan in place can help prevent accidents and injuries. Try not to overload your boxes. 2. Use proper lifting techniques When lifting heavy items, it’s important to use proper lifting techniques. Using your back when lifting can cause you an injury. Bend your knees and keep your back straight and lift with your legs, torso, and thighs instead of your back. Hold the item close to your body and avoid twisting while lifting. If the item is too heavy, ask for help or use a dolly or other lifting equipment. 3. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear Wearing appropriate clothing and footwear can help prevent injuries while moving heavy items. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that won’t restrict your movement. Avoid wearing jewelry or loose accessories that could get caught on furniture or other items. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction to prevent slips and falls. Trim your nails to get a firmer grasp of the object. One could opt for work gloves to protect your hands and keep the item from slipping out of your hands with its rubber grips. 4. Use proper equipment Using proper equipment can make moving heavy items much easier and safer. Use a dolly or hand truck to move heavy boxes or furniture. Use furniture sliders to move furniture across hardwood. Save yourself the time and pain by being safe while moving items. SHELVING FOR STORAGE UNIT – SOMETHING TO CONSIDER

Moving

Have you considered the pros and cons of having shelving in your storage unit? Let’s discuss this. SHELVING IN YOUR STORAGE UNIT, SHOULD YOU HAVE SOME? When you think about putting your items into storage, do you also consider shelves? We feel like shelving can be an important, and often overlooked perk of utilizing a storage unit for your belongings. Why is shelving necessary for my storage unit? Pros of Shelving in your storage unit Organization at a glance: By adding shelving, you can quickly and effortlessly sort your small items as well as fragile items. You are keeping them off the ground and away from the possibility of toppling. Awkward or irregularly shaped items can find a home on the shelves without the use of creative stacking or Tetris like skills. Create more vertical space in your storage unit with the addition of shelves. A lot of people don’t consider storing vertically, but they really should. With the addition of shelving in your storage unit, you can stack items without having to balance them and hope boxes don’t settle and cave. One thing to be mindful of is keeping space around the exterior of your storage unit. Leaving space around the walls of your storage unit allows for proper airflow. A six to twelve-inch gap should do the trick nicely. Cons of Shelving in your storage unit One more item(s) to assemble or move, which may lead to unforeseen difficulties. Adding shelving might be viewed as a setback, especially if you are on a time constraint. Having to assemble then load shelves takes time. Do you have the time to spare? Finding shelving that fits your storage unit as well as the needs might result in spending money you didn’t plan. Depending on your budget, adding shelving (especially if this would be a new purchase) simply isn’t a feasible option. It’s your storage unit, do what you feel works for you. While our opinion is just that an idea, ultimately, it is up to you to decide the best course of ...

MOVING IS STRESSFUL

Moving

We understand that moving isn’t always by choice or on our time. We’ve got some words to help encourage you during this time. LET’S FACE IT, MOVING IS STRESSFUL… Here’s some innovative ideas I’ve seen customers do over the years here at Tellus Self Storage that not only work but will make your life A LOT EASIER! PALLETS: Yes, those wooden things that you see here and there left out for the trash because no one knows what to do with them other than making really cool patio furniture with. Place a few pallets on the floor of your storage unit to place items on to allow air flow underneath them like antique furniture items or cardboard boxes. TOTES VS CARD BOARD BOXES: In reality, if you use 2-3 different size boxes, your life will be easier just because it’s easier to stack them than a bunch of odd sized boxes. Remember to clearly label your boxes and stack according to weight with your heavier boxes on the bottom. FURNITURE SLIDERS: These round little plastic guys work great under heavy furniture items while in storage! If you need to move a piece of furniture around in your unit, just slide it. It’s that simple! DISH KITS: Glasses, Dishes and Serving Platters….Oh My! If you’re anything like me, your kitchen is full of all kinds of awesome tableware in lots of shapes and sizes. Our crystal protection and dish protection kits are made to prevent dishes from breaking but also come in a small manageable box so it’s not so heavy for you to move as well. VACUUM SEALED BAGS: Vacuuming out the air to those bags with linens, pillows and blankets in will help to save MAJOR space! BOOKSHELVES: Utilize every little inch of space buy using your bookshelves and dressers for storing odd sized items and small boxes. ...

NEED BOXES ? WE CAN HELP!

Moving

Most of our self storage facilities offer moving and packing supplies, including boxes! WE’VE GOT BOXES! Here is a photo of our Tellus Self Storage St Petersburg location’s boxes for sale: Remember: Tellus Self Storage St Petersburg is a Great Place to Store, but we have boxes too! They come in a variety of sizes, which allow you to pack with efficiency and organization. Another thing to note when packing is the use of speciality materials that you may or may not be aware of, like garment boxes / bags and furniture coverings. Furniture coverings help protect your items from dust, and dirt that travel through the air and over time will accumulate. We also recommend visiting your storage unit at least once a year or at the change of the seasons. One reason why you might want to check on your items is simply shifting. This can happen as varying weights are placed on one another and one corner or edge is off center, unintentionally but certainly not something you should ignore. Make plans to visit your storage unit at least once a year so you can check on the contents as well as make any needed adjustments. This storage tip and reminder are brought to you by Tellus Self Storage St Petersburg! You can reserve online, call us or stop by! Address: 898 30th Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33704 Phone: 727.513.3471 While this storage location does sell moving and packing supplies not all of our Tellus Self Storage locations do. 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT INTO A STORAGE UNIT

Moving

When packing items for your storage unit there are 7 things that shouldn’t go into storage.  After you’ve decided to move into a storage unit you should also keep in mind a few items that you should never store. Food: This includes canned food, MREs, dried foods, or even powdered foods. Insects can smell through walls and sometimes boxes. This means they will be able to find, and attack any food items you opt to place into your storage unit. Animals: Storage units are not akin to kennels, there is not an unlimited supply of air. Not only is this a health hazard, it can be dangerous. Plants: Plants need sunlight, air, and water. Storing dirt creates an opportunity for a pest infestation. Bugs love dirt, no one wants bugs. Hazardous Materials: This poses a danger to both other tenants and our Property Managers. Scented Items: Scented waxes, candles, or even dried herbs should not be placed in storage. These smells will attract pests, again no one wants pests. Wet Items: When you place wet items into storage you create an environment for mold to grow. The humidity in the air coupled with wet or damp items placed into a dark storage unit will ultimately grow mold. This is very dangerous for you and other tenants as mold spores might travel in the air and spread. Valuables : This is a rule created for your protection. Think of your safety when moving into your storage unit. If someone sees you moving large tv’s or expensive equipment into storage they might get the idea to rob you. Very dangerous. Along these same lines you should never store anything that is highly sentimental. Your mental health should be taken seriously and placing items that you care about into storage. Be sure to handle your important items with care. While this is a short list of items you should always use your best judgement when packing up items to be placed in your storage unit. If you are unsure about something ask ...
