CRAWFISH BOILS

Seasonal

Crawfish boils are a beloved tradition in the southern United States, particularly Louisiana. These events bring together friends and family for a day of feasting and fun centered around boiled crawfish’s delicious and unique flavor. Crawfish, also known as crayfish or crawdads, are small freshwater crustaceans that resemble miniature lobsters. They are a staple of southern cuisine, typically harvested from the swamps and bayous of Louisiana and other southern states. The crawfish boil is a festive affair, often held outdoors in a backyard or park. The event’s centerpiece is a large pot of boiling water seasoned with a blend of spices and herbs that give the crawfish their distinctive flavor. Other ingredients, such as potatoes, corn on the cob, and sausage, are often added to the pot to cook alongside the crawfish. Once the water is boiling, the crawfish are added to the pot and cooked for several minutes until they turn bright red. They are then removed from the pot and dumped onto a large table covered in newspaper or butcher paper. Diners gather around the table to peel and eat the crawfish, often accompanied by a beverage. The process of eating crawfish is a messy one, but it is also a social one. Diners use their hands to peel the shells off the crawfish, revealing the tender meat inside. The discarded shells are piled up on the table, creating a colorful and fragrant mound of seafood debris. Crawfish boils are more than just a meal – they celebrate Southern culture and hospitality. They bring together people of all ages and backgrounds, allowing them to connect with friends and family over a shared love of good food and company. In recent years, crawfish boils have become popular beyond the southern United States, with restaurants and food trucks serving up their versions of this classic dish. However, there is nothing quite like the experience of a traditional crawfish boil, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of southern springtime. In conclusion, crawfish ...

MARDI GRAS STORAGE

Seasonal

mardigras-150x150.png

Mardi Gras is just around the corner. With all the beads, costumes, decorations, and floats, where do you have space to put all this stuff? You may want your float to be at its best for the parades and don’t want it to get damaged by the elements. Or do you need a place to save your festivities for next year? Storage units are a fantastic choice for storing your Mardi Gras stuff. The Gulf Coast’s weather can be inconsistent at this time of the year, so a climate-controlled storage would be best to help ensure that your stuff can make it to the parade in the best condition possible. The climate-controlled storage unit can help prevent mildew and mold from the hot, humid, and wet weather. Be sure not to store any food, candles, scented waxes, or dried plants. You need to take some steps for your costumes to maintain the quality of your outfit. If the costume is made with polyester, acrylic, or cotton, you can wash the costume in a washing machine. Make sure that you’re using the delicate cycle when washing. You might not have to store your child’s costume because kids like to play with it, and the outfit is small enough not to take up much space in the closet, plus the kids could use the costume for a school play or another holiday, and some kids might not be able to fit into their costume next year. Wash your wigs with shampoo and conditioner that’s made for wigs. Next, let the wig air dry on a towel. Finally, fold the wig and place it into a hairnet. Now, as far as beads go, clean the beads of all candy and food. Store the beads in a sturdy container with a lid that locks. Floats can take up quite a bit of space at home, but they would be great for a storage unit. Cleaning the inside and outside of the float will help prevent any bad smells ...

HOW TO STORE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Seasonal

With holidays such as Halloween and Christmas on the horizon, it’s time to figure out where your decorations are for when the festivities end. A storage unit is a perfect choice for storing your holiday knickknacks. Labels – Be sure to label the boxes where you put your decorations. This will make your trips to the unit go by faster. You’re not going to want to accidentally grab a box of Mardi Gras décor for the Halloween season. It would probably be best to store a holiday in each of their own boxes. You could even label the smaller bags that are inside the container. Climate Control – Depending on the material and what you store, a climate-controlled unit will eliminate the worry of your items being damaged by the heat or cold. Wreaths – Hang and place a bag over the wreaths to prevent crushing them. Wrapping wreaths in a bag helps protect them from the elements. Trees – Shrink wrapping your Christmas trees can save space and save the time of having to take the ornaments off. You also won’t have to take the apart and put it back in the box with this method. Lights – Wrapping your lights around cardboard will help prevent your lights from breaking or getting tangled. Placement – If you’re also using your storage to store other nonseasonal items, you’ll want to place the holiday boxes in the back of the storage since you won’t use them often. Linens – Clean your linens before storing them, so the stains don’t become harder to clean. Beads – A mason jar or bottle is a good place to keep beads. Ornaments – Bubble wrap and different decorations to keep them from shattering. A lot of these items should be placed in plastic bins. At select Tellus Self Storage locations, we have a retail shop that sells moving and packing supplies at your convenience. ...

FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE RECIPE BY TELLUS SELF STORAGE ST PETERSBURG’S ALAN RUST

Seasonal

Tellus Self Storage – St Petersburg Presents a delicious and easy to follow French Toast Casserole Recipe. French Toast Casserole This has become a favorite among my friends during the Holiday Season… it is a quick breakfast for you and your guests, the ones that you might have staying over with you for the holidays… Thanksgiving or Christmas… it allows for you to focus on them and the main meal of the day and/or if you’re about to travel to another home.  I usually assemble it the evening before and refrigerate it overnight, this way the custard mixture and other flavors added can be thoroughly absorbed by the bread before baking.  Of course, you can make this dish at any time of the year… it has been a favorite at Sunday brunches too. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 40 minutes Yield: 6 to 8 Servings Ingredients: QUICK NOTE: Remember… the better the quality your ingredients are, the increased wow factor in taste. 1 Large loaf of good quality bread.  (I usually use French or Ciabatta Rolls that I have on hand around the house, but any favorite bread is good.) Aprox. 10 Cups give or take. 5 Large Eggs ¾ Cup of Whole Milk ¾ Cup of Cream (Note: if you don’t have cream, Use 1 ½ cups of Whole Milk) ¼ Cup of Sugar in the Raw (or any Organic Sugar) this is for the custard, but you’ll want to sprinkle more on top before backing. I use a combo of fine granulated and course for sprinkling on top. 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract Pinch of Salt 1 Stick of Kerry Gold Butter (Either Salted or unsalted – If you use salted, skip the pinch of salt) Optional:  Fresh fruit (I love Blueberries myself), Chocolate Chips, Chopped Nuts or Dried Fruit (Cranberries). –  Note: Make sure fruit used is bite sized. Maple Syrup or Syrup of choice. Assemble/Prep: Grease your pan liberally with butter. I find that using a ceramic ramie is best. I like the high sides and looks nice when you serve it right out ...

PEST CONTROL: WORKING WITH YOUR STORAGE FACILITY

Seasonal

Staying on top of pests takes a team effort, because once you place a lock on your storage unit we don’t have access to your items. Here’s a bit about what you can do to help us out PEST CONTROL KNOWLEDGE IS POWER When considering self storage it is important to know what items you should put in a storage unit, and what items you should not put in a storage unit. This is one of the most important parts of pest control at any self storage facility. Getting tenants to follow basic housekeeping items can help prevent unwanted infestations. Things you should not store A few items you want to avoid putting in a storage unit are: Any and all food items (including canned or dry food, even if they are in a ‘air tight container’ pests will find a way) Medications Candles / waxes (especially scented) Cleaning chemicals (liquid or powder, these smells attract pests) As stated above these are just a few items, but not all. If you are unsure if your items should be in a storage unit or not, you can ask your Property Manager. If you don’t have the time to discuss items that you are going to be storing you can simply ask yourself two simple questions to determine if the items in question should or shouldn’t be stored. These questions are: Can you eat it? Does it have a smell to it? If you answered YES to any of the two questions, chances are that the item in question; will in fact, attract pests. Best not to store it. Pest control is very important to us here at Tellus Self Storage. We strive to give our tenants the best experience possible which is why we aim to spread education and awareness. Here at Tellus Self Storage we treat out properties with pest control once a month. This includes spraying pesticide, and putting out bait. Bait is used as a precaution and also to lure pests away from the storage units themselves. Keeping them on the outside of ...

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Seasonal

We like to think of Independence Day as a fun filled holiday with fireworks, grills, BBQs and no work. But do you actually know what and why we celebrate the Fourth of July? Why do we celebrate Independence Day on the Fourth of July? If your answer is: because its America’s Independence day! You’re close but not quite there, now for some history: Once upon a time in the year 1776, the Declaration of Independence was created, specifically on July 2nd. In the days that followed the Continental Congress worked hard at editing and rewording the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776 they finalized the changes and agreed to them. Therefore July 4, 1776, is the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence. Did you know that the decorative handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence that ended up being signed wasn’t actually signed until August? That means this fancy piece of very important paper had to wait to get the much needed attention that it so deserved. You can view this signed copy in person if you so like, it is display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. If you’d like even more history check out these two websites: Constitution Facts.Com Military .com How do you celebrate? We like to get together with family and friends, usually for a cookout. Grill up some steaks, hotdogs, or even have a crawfish boil. The weather is wonderful ( normally) this time of the year and we are able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Watersports are very big near the Gulf so we also participate in those as well. No matter what you do, even if it’s just a nice quiet meal at home, remember to enjoy it. As for us at Tellus Self Storage we just want to wish everyone a safe, happy and fun Fourth of July. ...

SUMMER MEANS ITS TIME TO GET OUTSIDE

Seasonal

Ready to have fun in the summer sun? We’ve got some tips for your storage unit while the weather heats up for summer. PACK APPROPRIATELY When loading up your boxes, totes or crates be sure to take into consideration the integrity of the items you’re packing.  Just as it is not a good idea to place books on top of glass, you should ensure that your packing vessel is appropriate for its contents. LABELS OUT Always label your boxes, you don’t have to be literal but you should have some sort of identification system in place so you can easily sort and locate your items once they are all packed away. ORGANIZE Start with the end in mind, even if you’re about to pack up an entire house it is wise to start with one room or section at a time. This will help you plan out the layout of your storage unit as well as ensure everything is packed securely. STURDY STACKS When placing items in your storage unit it is wise to have strong sturdy bases, especially for ‘towers’ of boxes. Also, do yourself a favor and create walkways so you can easily get to various items in your storage unit. Now that the seriousness is over get out there and have some fun, summer won’t last forever! ...
