With the colder, drier weather on the horizon, freeing up space in your garage from all your lawn care equipment is not a bad idea. You never know if you’ll need room for snow shovels.
While you can keep a lawn mower outside during the winter, it’s not ideal for long-term use. Here are some tips to keep your lawn equipment excellent and ready for the Spring.
- Be sure to empty any gasoline, a hazardous chemical prohibited from storing in storage units.
- Just circulate the fuel tank with a fuel stabilizer for ten minutes to empty the gasoline while the engine runs. After the engine cools down, empty the tank. Turn the mower on until it can’t start anymore.
- Wear gloves for safety.
- Disconnect the spark plugs, so the mower doesn’t accidentally start while you’re working on it.
- Remove the blade, clean it with water, and sharpen it if necessary.
- For a four-cycle engine, place a pan and tarp under the mower.
- Set the mower on its side and ensure the carburetor and air filter facing up.
- Take out the reservoir plug and tilt the mower until oil drains from the pan.
- Replace the plug after all the oil is drained.
- Scrape off the grass and mud on the exterior and mower deck.
- Put the blade back on the mower.
- Turn the mower back upright and fill the oil tank with whatever oil is recommended in your product’s manual.
- Recycle or dispose of the old oil safely.
- Remove the battery
- If your air filter is paper, then replace the paper filter with a new one and have the edges facing out.
- If your air filter is foam, wash it with soap and warm water.
- Clean the dirt and debris on the cooling fins with compressed air.
- Replace the spark plug.
After you’ve done all that, loosen the handles, fold the mower and move the cables out of the way, and then place your mower in the truck of your vehicle. You might want to get a climate-controlled unit to ensure the mower will last longer.
