Hattiesburg is an underrated gem located in south Mississippi. It’s also arguably the best city in the state. Hattiesburg is known as the Hub City due to its location. If you’re looking for a fresh start, Hattiesburg is just the place for you.

With two universities, Camp Shelby, and three nearby community colleges, Hattiesburg is known for having one of Mississippi’s best millennial and Gen-Z populations. If you want to be surrounded by various types of people while in Mississippi, then Hattiesburg is your spot. If you’re a young adult, Hattiesburg is the place to be with its low housing costs, modern feel, and the bustling job market. The city’s median age is 28.7, ranking the city above the state’s average in diversity. Hattiesburg is a great city for young professionals in a city that is constantly growing while being in the country’s top 20 fastest-growing big cities.

As stated previously, Hattiesburg is an affordable city. Its affordability and laid-back nature make the city a popular retirement destination. With the addition of new businesses coming to town, the city ranked 2nd in job growth amongst U.S. metro areas.

Hattiesburg has a variety of entertainment options. There are the NCAA Division 1 University of Southern Mississippi and NAIA William Carey sporting events, for starters. Hattiesburg is full of talented artists. Saenger Theater, USM, and William Carey University provide some theatrical and musical performances. Speaking of talented artists, Hattiesburg’s downtown area was ranked in Travel and Leisure’s Top 11 Cities for Downtown Art. HUBFEST is an annual spring music festival and premier arts that draws over 30,000 people annually. Hattiesburg also has a zoo which is great for families. There is also a water park coming soon to the city. Mardi Gras is also celebrated here with a parade.

As stated before, Hattiesburg is called the Hub City due to its location. The city is close to Jackson, Mobile, Gulfport, Biloxi, and New Orleans.

The Hattiesburg metro is home to some of the top schools in the state. Oak Grove School Districts and Petal School Districts are some of the best school districts in Mississippi. The University of Southern Mississippi is a Carnegie R1 research institution that brings the state an economic impact of $663 million. USM offers 189 programs in bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctorate degrees. USM is known for its ocean science, polymer science, sports management, business, education, nursing, fine arts, performing arts, liberal arts, and engineering programs. William Carey University is a private Baptist school known for being a best-value university while carrying out its vision of blending faith and learning with living as students prepare to follow their calling into the world. Pearl River Community College helps prepare students for university or the workforce with one of its many technical programs.
